Bhavans Swarmed by Spell-tacular Bees

Spellbinding Bees from different parts of the middle eastern world buzzed around Bhavans and collected nectar of letters to store in their hives of achievements as the grand finale of the fourth edition of Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan’s Spell Bee, a spell-the-word contest, culminated at Indian Educational School Kuwait in the most magnificent manner on 21st January 2017.
The school auditorium was filled with ‘lingusiasts’ who wanted to witness the Spell Bee Contest. Mr. Grant Butler, the Country Director, the British Council Kuwait was the chief guest of the day to grace the day of grandeur. Mr. Suresh.V. Balakrishnan, the Vice Principal, the Middle and the senior wings, IES and Ms. Jaemi Byju, the Head of the English Department, the middle and the senior wings, IES were the chief pronouncers supported by Mr. E.P Prasad, Department of English. Spellers from different schools in Kuwait were categorized and seated on the dais with their counterparts seated and racking their brain cells at different locations in the Middle East in real time.

The program started with the recitation of a verse from the Holy Quran followed by the Kuwait National Anthem, Lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries and a prayer song by the school choir. After the divine invocation, Mr. T. Premkumar, Principal Indian Educational School Kuwait welcomed the gathering and shared with everyone his awe-inspiring thoughts on life in general and language in particular. Mr. Mahesh Iyer, the Principal, Smart Indian School, Kuwait aired his view on English language and its nuances through his speech of felicitation. Mrs. Muneera Mammikutty, the Head of English Department, the primary wing, IES, briefed the audience on the importance of Bhavans Spell Bee and its impact on young linguists.

Though the spellers were tested to the core with words of extreme complexity, in four rounds, they all emerged unscathed. The audience in the auditorium and the many thousands glued to the live streaming were spelled into a trance by the geniuses of such magnitude. After 3 hours of brain churning, the race to brilliance ended with an electrifying hip-hop by the dancers of IES much to the appreciation of the evening gathering.

Soon after, the winners in each category were declared the vice principal of primary and kindergarten Ms. Lalitha Premkumar with two spellers in category 5 tied at the last juncture. Though the pronouncers tried all the arrows from their quiver the tie couldn’t be broken. Both the smart spellers were declared the champions in their category.

The winners are as follows: Category 1: Manani , Bahrain Indian School Bahrain (1st place), Rayan Abdulla Hashik, Indian Educational School Kuwait (2nd place) and Vihaan Malpani, Modern International School Oman (3rd place). Category 2: Rahul Wavare, British School of Kuwait (1st place), Sunish Sunil Bayalan, Bahrain Indian School Bahrain (2nd place) and Evin Jeston , Private International English School, Abu Dhabi, UAE (3rd place). Category 3: Fawaz Ahmed, Private International English School Abu Dhabi, UAE (1st place), Steve Chalil Biju, Bahrain Indian School Bahrain (2nd place), Rajvi Anishkumar Shah, Modern International School Oman (2nd place) and Darrel Jovan, Indian English Academy School Kuwait (2nd place). Category 4: Karthik Sudheer, Indian Educational School Kuwait (1st place), Abhay Lejith, Private International English School Abu Dhabi, UAE (2nd place) and Anushka Unnit Mankodi, Modern International School Oman (3rd place). Category 5: Shevins Kosseril Kunjumon, Indian Educational School Kuwait (1st place), Sumaiya Asif Sayed, Indian Educational School Kuwait (1st place) and Theres Rosa Sajan, United Indian School Kuwait (2nd place).  Prize money INR 50,000, 10,000 and 5000 were presented to the winners and runners up in all the five categories.

The day of class and caliber ended with a thought provoking speech by Mr. Grant Butler, the chief guest, who was much in awe of the Spell Bee Contest well organized. The vote of thanks was then proposed by Mr. Suresh V Balakrishnan, the Vice Principal, the Middle and the Senior wings, IES and GCC Coordinator of the contest. The Indian National Anthem eventually concluded the fourth edition of the most exciting spelling game in the GCC.
