On 6 October Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (IES) paid a rich tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, by celebrating his birth anniversary in the most befitting way in the school premises. The programme was graced by the auspicious presence of Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan, (Retd. Senior Scientist, CSIR, Govt. of India). The other notable personages present were the Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Middle East, Mr. N. K. Ramachandran Menon, the Principal of IES, Mr. T. Premkumar, the Vice Principals Mrs. Lalitha Premkumar and Mr. Suresh V Balakrishnan, HoDs and the teachers.
The welcome note was delivered by Mrs. Meenakshi Nayyar, the HoD of Social Science and the lighting of the lamp was performed by the chief guest, Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan in the presence of the chairman, the principal, the vice principals and the teachers.
Referring to the teachings of Gandhiji, Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan, urged the listeners to lead a simple life, a mantra practised by Gandhiji. He stressed the importance of value education and parental care in the life of children.
In the corridors and in the classrooms of the school, soft boards and bulletin boards were decorated, displaying the life of Mahatma Gandhi and his ideologies in the form of pictures and writings. As part of the celebration, portraits of the ‘Mahatma’, arranged in the most traditional way, adorned with lamps and flowers, were placed in all the corridors of the school. Gandhiji’s favourite bhajans were played through the public address system.
